On a cool morning in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Polly Moffatt raced through her garden with her pet rabbit, Clover, by her side. Excitement filled the air, especially after Aunt Katharine shared a thrilling story with Polly.
“Aunt Katharine said Paul Revere came to Portsmouth last December to warn us that the British were bringing soldiers to Fort William and Mary!” Polly exclaimed. “He rode all the way from Boston! The Colonists didn’t want the British to take away their freedom, so they did something brave.”
Polly eagerly explained that Cousin Samuel Cutts and over 400 men rowed through the freezing river to the fort and took 97 barrels of gunpowder from the British.
With a sudden idea, Polly dashed through the Moffatt mansion, searching for hidden gunpowder but only found a smelly barrel of ale. Disappointed, she asked Aunt Katharine if any gunpowder was hidden in the house.
Aunt Katharine gently explained that though no gunpowder was hidden in their mansion, the men’s actions were brave and crucial for the battles ahead. Polly felt proud of the heroes in her town.
Sitting with Clover in the garden, Polly whispered, “Maybe next time, Clover, we’ll find a secret of our own.” And she knew their next adventure was waiting just around the corner.

Paul Revere’s journey in 1774 was called the “Midday Ride”. He made the famous “Midnight Ride” in1775.
