Our 18th to 19th Century Education Program

The Moffatt-Ladd House & Garden offers Daily Demos and other engaging educational activities for all ages

DAILY DEMOS

Biology Drawing Class

The daily demo is a featured activity that is conducted at the museum for people traveling with and visiting with children.

​

The are relatively self serve activities for ages grade 3 through grade 8 and are conducted at a schedule time each daily.

​

Our demos address areas of STEAM in overview format as indicated below in our schedule of offerings.   

MUSEUM FIELD TRIPS

School Children

The School Field Trip Program is a program that is scheduled with a teacher and consists of a agreed time and focus.  The teacher has the ability to choose from a variety of programs and cherry pick from a series to fill the field trip with learning opportunities that coincidence with the school activities and curriculum as determined by the teacher. Our programs cover areas of STEAM as indicated below in our schedule of offerings.

OUR AREAS OF LEARNING FOCUS

Money & Business

Students will learn about coins/paper money used in NH and New England (ex: NH paper money and English and Spanish money), focusing on fractions (pieces of eight, two bits), value over time, symbols on money, and bartering and trade. Visit themes on the counting house, the safe, wharves and shops. GAME 1: make your own money. EARNS: MLH ACHIEVEMENT STAMP STEAM AREAS COVERED: S,M,A

Communication: Quill & Ink/Mail & Pigeons

Students will compare and contrast communication methods from the 18-19th centuries and today, such as parchment and quills and ink, how mail was delivered. Transportation & Map Making

Students will learn about the importance of maps, what maps were used in the 17th-19th centuries, the trade routes used, what was traded, and how long sea voyages took between the American colonies (and Caribbean) and Europe. Focus on the colonies, Caribbean and Europe/Africa with the goods trades (ex: sugar, molasses, cod, ceramics) Activity: Earns: MLH Achievement Stamp STEAM Areas Covered: A

Energy: Heat, Light and Water

Students will learn about how buildings were heated and lit in Portsmouth in colonial through Victorian times. They will learn about plumbing, water use (like bathing, kitchen, what did they use for the toilet) with examples like the Portsmouth Aqueduct Company and Union Aqueduct and our cresset. A Day in the Life of a Merchant Sailor

The goal of this lesson is to build students' understanding of everyday life as a sailor on an 18th to 19th century ship. Discover what kinds of jobs were done on board ship and in port, as well as what the food was like, how it was like to sleep in a hammock, and how much a sailor would be paid. Activity: knot tying

The Trades & Professions

Students will learn about different professions in the 1700-1800s, including smithing, coopering, weaving, merchant trade, pottery, and farming. Detail on last names and how they relate to trades back to the Normans. Detail on weaving as an early computer. Game 1: Trade/professions bingo Students will learn about simple machines used on ships and warehouses, sp. Mechanical advantage and testing how they make things work easier. Block Print Wallpaper & Textiles

Students will learn about wallpaper and textile design and manufacture and see examples of paper shipped from England used to decorate houses like Moffatt-Ladd’s Parlor and Yellow Chamber. A history on paper, block printing and stenciling. Activity: block printing your own wallpaper GAME 1: make your own money. EARNS: MLH ACHIEVEMENT STAMP STEAM AREAS COVERED: T, A

Gardening & Plants

Kitchen: Cooking & Preservation

Students will learn about the similarities and differences of a colonial and Victorian vs. modern kitchen, with what and how things can be cooked. They will learn about preservation in the house and on ship as well as how children helped in the kitchen with activities like drying and using a mortar and pestle. Toys & Games: Colonial -1900

Students will learn about what toys and games were played in colonial through Victorian America. They will compare and contrast modern games with ones that they haven’t heard of, trying ones with pieces, board games and active games.
